Applying Candle Wax to My Skin, Really?
Keeping Body Play Clean, Fun, and Safe
Alright, so you’ve got your Body Play candle, the vibe is right, and you’re ready to go. Whether it's for a ritual, spell, or just good old fun, lets start with the basics so that the experience is all pleasure and no "Oops". (That means a lot of safety advice mixed in that we think you should be aware exists.)
- First things first: Talk about things. How do you want it to feel. Where do you want to feel it. How long do you want to go for. How hot do you want it to be. The fact that it's ok to back out halfway through. Make sure there are no allergies at play. (All of our Body Play and Body Oil line have the ingredients listed on the site and label!)
- Lay down a towel. Or an old sheet. Or one of those vinyl drop cloths from the hardware store. Unless you're really into scraping hardened wax off your furniture and floors (we're certainly not), you'll thank us later. Grab some ice water and put in an accessible space. And... make sure you have your fire safety gear nearby. No one wants to bump a candle and have it burn part of the rug.
- Know your canvas: Plan where you'll be dripping. Stick to the good spots—backs, shoulders, legs, and the booty are all fantastic. Avoid or cover places where the hot wax can pool and trap in heat, like the belly button.
Please avoid the face, hair (ouch), genitals, or any broken skin. Safety first, then sizzle.
- (Optional) Massage some oil (may we recommend a Body Oil candle?) or some petroleum jelly on the body and especially any areas of dense hair. This will make removal easier.
- Trim the wick and light: A longer wick means a hotter flame... sometimes too hot. Trim your wick to 1/4 inch and keep an eye on it. Being careful with your grip, rotate the candle while you drip to melt the wax evenly and avoid a deep pool around the wick. (It's ok to have to trim the wick mid scene, just blow the candle out carefully first.)
- Calibrate: You'll want to drip a bit on the back of your forearm or thigh from about 2 ft up to make sure the temperature feels good before pouring wax on someone else. Lower the candle and test out the sensations at various heights. Knowledge is power.
- Drip with confidence: Start by dripping from that higher range (2 ft) to start. The wax cools as it falls, making the sensation gentler. Want more heat? Drip from a little closer, keeping the flame away from skin and hair. Want less? Let the wax drip down the surface of the candle and cool before it lands.
Pro Tip: If you find yourself holding the candle over 2 feet away from the canvas your aim won't be as accurate, so consider trimming the wick or contacting us to get a lower temperature of candle custom made for you.
Ok, so the wax is on... How do I get it off now?
- Step Away From the Shower. We see you thinking about it. Wait until you get everything but the slightest residue off. Hot water will just melt the wax into a sticky, impossible-to-remove film and will send your plumbing bill into the stratosphere.
- Let it set. Just wait a few minutes. The wax will cool and harden on the skin as you relax. Or, yk, if you're really impatient, grab one of those ice cubes from earlier and rub it over the wax and the exposed skin for a bit of temperature play in the opposite direction. This can be really fun too!
- Once it's hard, the wax will flake or scrape right off. For larger wax puddles you can peel it right up or use the dull edge of a credit card to gently lift it. For everything else, you can just push gently with the edge of the card and slide right under the wax. It’s surprisingly satisfying.
- Check on the skin: Especially if you're choosing to play at higher-than-recommended temperatures, but really for anyone, check on your canvas after removal. The skin should be smooth and unmarred, but some people have more sensitive skin than others.
- Oil is our secret weapon: For any stubborn little waxy bits left behind, water is not your friend. Oil is. Grab some coconut oil, massage oil, or even olive oil from the kitchen. Rub it on, and the wax residue will melt right into it. Wipe it off with a towel you're ok getting oil on... then you can hop in that shower.
- Skin care afterwards? If you want to, especially if you noticed any spots that look like a light sunburn, you can put on some aloe vera or other sunburn remedy to soothe the skin as part of the recovery phase. This will keep the skin supple and ready to play again in the future, and it can be a wonderful way to wind down after intense feelings.
